The Spanish industry fulfills 99% of the objectives of the Plan for the Improvement of the Composition of Food and Beverages.

  • The results confirm the sector's commitment and the success of public-private collaboration.
  • The plan has been led by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN).
  • FIAB highlights the sector's contribution to the goals established in the National Strategic Plan for the Reduction of Childhood Obesity and calls for promoting other aspects such as active living, emotional well-being, and good rest habits.

The Spanish food and beverage industry has achieved 99% of the objectives set out in the Collaboration Plan for the Improvement of the Composition of Food and Beverages and Other Measures (2017-2020), according to the results made public by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN), which has led this project.

The plan aimed to reduce added sugars, salt, and saturated fats in more than 3,500 products that contribute to 44.5% of the total daily energy intake in the average shopping basket. As stated in the Evaluation Report by AESAN, the results "allow us to confirm the impact of reformulation measures on improving the composition of packaged foods and the food offering outside the home."

The cross-cutting nature and extensive scope of the plan in terms of product coverage, the number of involved companies, and the nutrients it covers are among its most significant strengths, and in many subcategories, the achieved reductions have even exceeded the set objectives.

Mauricio García de Quevedo, CEO of FIAB, believes that "the objectives achieved with the plan confirm the commitment of the food and beverage manufacturing industry to improving the nutritional composition of their products and are a great example of public-private collaboration. The experience represents a milestone at the European level, and we want to continue working alongside different administrations with a focus on consumers."

The World Health Organization (WHO) also considers the Collaboration Plan for the Improvement of the Composition of Food and Beverages and Other Measures as an "example in Spain of public-private collaboration to contribute to improving the nutritional quality of the shopping basket for all citizens."

The Spanish Federation of Food and Beverage Industries highlights the involvement and innovation efforts of sector associations and companies that have participated in the plan, as well as the successful work carried out in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition for nearly half a decade.

The results of the Collaboration Plan for the Improvement of the Composition of Food highlight the sector's contribution to the goals set in the National Strategic Plan for the Reduction of Childhood Obesity (2022-2030). FIAB reiterates the alignment and support of food and beverage manufacturers to this plan and emphasizes "the importance of promoting other aspects such as active living, emotional well-being, and healthy sleep habits."

"Nutrition is just one of the many factors that influence citizens' health. Therefore, in addition to improving the formulation of some products, a comprehensive response focused on consumer education, promoting a varied, balanced, and sufficient diet, and regular physical activity from childhood is essential," says Mauricio García de Quevedo, CEO of FIAB.
